Towering old-growth Oaks, a historic golf course, and a great natural creek, along with an eclectic mix of neighbors (Philosophy Professors, IT professionals, Retirees, and Young couples) is one of the best kept secrets of Austin. The residents here enjoy an actively lifestyle, biking, drumming, walking, golfing, tennis, swimming, and getting together with friends (most of which you’ll make when you move here.) Onion Creek (Originally called the Onion Creek Luxury Subdivision) has long been an oasis of genteel living in South Austin. Onion Creek’s relaxed lifestyle, almost non-existent crime rate and easy access to downtown Austin are sure to please. Establish in 1973 by Lumbermen’s Investment Corporation and C&D Investments started development of 960 acres along Onion Creek. Partners included Wayne McDonald, president of Lumbermen’s Investment Corporation, golfer Jimmie Connolly of C&D Investments, and golfer Jimmy Demaret. Construction began on a 33,000-square-foot country club, and Demaret designed an eighteen-hole golf course which opened in the fall of 1973. The Onion Creek luxury subdivision and country club officially opened in 1974 with a celebration that included Bob Hope, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and other celebrities as guests. Over the years the golf course gained a national reputation as a premier destination.

The first senior professional golf tournament, The Legends of Golf, was held there for eleven years, beginning in 1978. Golfer Ben Crenshaw designed nine additional golf holes into the course in 1996, and the LPGA held its Harvey Penick Invitational at Onion Creek from 1999 to 2001. Annexed by the City of Austin in 2004 and in spite of being part of the city, the residents have been able to maintain a private security force, as well as superior solid waste disposal services. Children in the neighborhood are served by the Austin Independent School District through Menchaca Elementary SchoolParedes Middle School and Akins High School. The Southpark Meadows retail area south of Slaughter Lane and west of Interstate 35 has made the Onion Creek community an even more attractive location by offering a mix of shopping opportunities along with many restaurants and other service providers. In November 2013, AT&T announced that the Onion Creek neighborhood would become one of four Austin neighborhoods to get their new GigaPower high speed internet service.
